History
From Saddlery to Coachbuilding Excellence - Five centuries in the making
Mulliner’s heritage can be traced back to 1559 with a family of saddlers and carriers, but it wasn’t until 1760 that F. Mulliner rose to prominence, crafting carriages for the Royal Mail. In 1870, Robert Bouverie Mulliner established Mulliner London Limited, dedicated to the pursuit of perfection in coachbuilding. At the turn of the 19th century, H.J. Mulliner moved the family business to London’s fashionable Mayfair under the name H.J. Mulliner & Co., where it became known for crafting coaches tailored to each client’s exacting standards.
"Mulliner Continues its legacy of unparalleled craftsmanship"
At the turn of the century, the company made a pivotal decision to move away from horse-drawn vehicles with the arrival of a new, mechanical mode of transport: the motor car. Buying a car in the early 20th century was vastly different from today. Cars left the factory as a simple engine mounted on a chassis, equipped only with a steering wheel and transmission system. You could drive it, but not for long—nor comfortably. For that, you needed a custom-built body and cabin complete with seats and other amenities to make it a true recreational vehicle. This was the work of a coachbuilder.
Coachbuilding, as we know it, had arrived. Today, Mulliner serves as Bentley’s personal commissioning division, offering everything from premium options on production cars to unique bespoke creations like the Bentley Bacalar and Batur. With over 250 years of heritage since F. Mulliner’s commission for the Royal Mail, Mulliner continues its legacy of unparalleled craftsmanship, passed down through generations.
